Service Design tools

Some tools as support for observing experiences, relationships and how services function

Service design tools help make visible what often remains scattered in everyday work: relationships, processes, dependencies, and decisions that shape the experience.

They are not meant to “fix” the service, nor to create perfect models. They exist to help see more clearly.

When placed on paper, many things surface: bottlenecks, overloads, gaps, excesses, and repetitions.

While the Service Design lens helps perceive the service as a whole, tools help organize that way of seeing.

They allow experience and operations to be observed together and help align different perspectives around the service.

Customer Journey Map

The journey helps observe experience over time.

It makes visible the path of those who use the service, from before the first contact to closure, revealing moments of waiting, transitions, doubts, and points of effort.

The journey helps notice:
- where the experience flows
- where it breaks
- where it asks for more attention

A question to observe
At which moments does the experience ask for more than the service can offer?

Service Blueprint

The service blueprint is a map of the backstage.
It shows what needs to happen behind the scenes for the customer experience to work as expected.

In this map, what the customer experiences appears alongside everything that sustains that experience internally: people, processes, touchpoints, decisions, and routines that are usually unseen.

Looking at this whole makes it easier to notice:

- who does what for the experience to happen

- where tasks and responsibilities accumulate

- which dependencies create delay or tension

- where operations carry more than they should

The blueprint helps understand whether what happens backstage can actually sustain the experience being offered.

A question to observe

What needs to happen backstage for this experience to work, and is that sustainable day to day?

A question to carry with you

What do these tools help make visible that usually goes unnoticed?
